Skiing the Whiteface Slides: Part 2

While Slides 1-4 are easily accessed from the Summit Quad, there are other slides on Whiteface, that require work to access. I haven't skied them, but I’ll relay what I have learned from others.

You can easily see Slide 5. And it looks like there should be a way get there through the woods from Slide 4, but there is not. People who ski it usually skin up the highway and make their way down to it from there. One friend said that from the woods above it, it's hard to locate. He's missed it at the top and had to bootpack back up to ski it. Nice to check it off his to do list, but a lot of work.

Slide 6

As you can see, Slide 6 is off the highway. I surmise that you drop in from an upper part and ski down to where it intersects back to the highway. People skiing it, but I don’t know anyone who's done it.

Slide 7

Slide 7 is on the Lake Placid (Southeast) side of Whiteface and is beautiful to look at. I’m told the best way to do it is to skin up the highway and go around to the top of the slide. At the end of this slide, you have to get to the Brook trail then down and out to the Connery Pond trail, which will take you to Route 86, where you needed to spot a second car to drive back to the car you left at the bottom of Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway .

I know this route has been skied by many. I don’t know anyone personally who has done it. AT gear is required and you better be with some people who know what they're doing.

1 Comments:

  1. Great info and pics HPD. I've looked at Slide 6 from the Whiteface Highway many times, and it's always looked very bouldery to me... I had always thought that it didn't look very skiable. It sure has great, easy access and it sounds as though many have skied it. Guess I'll have to add that to my "get to it" list.
