For the last couple of years, we've wanted to take the kids to Europe. The stars and our schedules finally aligned this summer.

New York Ski Video 2010/2011
I've dreamed of a Harvey Road season ending video for the last two years. A group of New York skiers would agree to carry cameras with video capability, and a shoot a few 20-second clips, each time they go out. The quality of the clips on my Canon SD 1200 is surprisingly good. I'd bet that if your camera is fairly recent, the clips are just as good.
If you've got editing skills or equipment, or a camera and interest in a project like this, we'd like to hear from you. Send us a note: harvey44@nyskiblog.com. Or join the discussion.

Finding the Mountains of New York
Highpeaksdrifter's tale about how he found Whiteface got me thinking about how I came to the mountains of New York.
I could pretend that it was part of a grand plan — but it wasn't. The summer after my junior year in college, I was looking for an adventure. I pulled out a map of the northeast and looked at the big patches of green: the Catskills, the Adirondacks, the Greens and the Whites. The Adirondacks looked especially wild and untamed to me.
My best friend and I spent 10 days cycling and exploring the park. We had the time of our lives. This was my first experience with the idea of "Forest Preserve." Huge areas of wilderness, without rules or fees. The feeling of freedom was liberating.

The Garden State: Red Raspberries
Posted by Jamesdeluxe:
July is red raspberry season throughout the northeast, and over the past three weeks I've been picking in several locations: Central New York, the Adirondacks, and the Shawangunks.

Friday Fantasy Photo #7
"I met Xman and Margo at 9:45 at the Gondi. Unlike other rendezvous plans from this weekend, it worked perfectly. Off the Gondi we chose Uncas. It's got pitch, and southeast face, makes it great first choice on a spring day..."

Gore Mountain Terrain Update
I had a chance to see some of the new terrain at Gore with Mike Pratt on Saturday. Progress looked really good. We started up Wild Air to see the new "low-angle learning glade" Chatterbox.

Hudson River Gorge, NY: 7/10/10
by Jamesdeluxe
After my zip line experience this summer, I can cross another bullet off my outdoor sports to-do list: whitewater rafting.
Mid-Morning on Indian River
In the Central Adirondacks, there are several rafting outfitters that take advantage of scheduled dam releases from Indian Lake to run river trips from April to October: a six-month season. North Creek Rafting Company (NCRC), a very short walk from Main Street, outfitted us with equipment, gave our group a quick orientation, drove us to the put-in site, and within a minute or two, we were careening through our first series of Class 3 rapids.

Ski Bowl Liftline Photo

In our Gore Mountain Summer Update done in mid-May, Mike Pratt indicated that installing pipe for snowmaking on the Ski Bowl liftline was a goal, but not guaranteed. This iPhone photo seems to show work in progress towards that objective.

Split Rock Quarry, NY: 7/2/10
Posted by Jamesdeluxe:
Whenever I visit my mother in the western suburbs of Syracuse, I mountain bike a couple hours a day in an extensive network of trails that was originally part of the Split Rock limestone quarry, which had been in existence since the early 1800s. The only thing left is a large stone crusher that went into operation in 1903.

Gore Mountain Goals
I hadn't skied every trail at Gore until 3 years ago. With new trails coming on the interconnect, once again, I can't say I've skied all the groomers. Gore is still a big challenge for me. At 52...there's a chance that I'll might not get to ski all of Gore if you include all the tree shots.
Harv in Cirque
That's a goal...learn and ski every named run at Gore. I realize that's a moving target. There are new trails and glades being added to the map for next winter, and industrious enthusiasts seem to keep the list of tree shots growing all the time.
