Avalanche

IMG_7267.jpeg

Pretty significant crown at Mammoth, where they’ve had more than 115 inches (up to 170 inches at the summit) of snow in the past two weeks, and a patroller was killed doing mitigation work earlier this season as well.

News coming out about a snowmobile avalanche fatality in the Castle Peak area around Donner Pass.

If you are headed West and you like to explore be careful out there.

Yikes!

That’s pretty massive.

Sketchy start to the season, in many areas, as a PWL seems to be pretty common in several Western States. I’ve seen reports of related avy activity from Utah, Colorado, and now this.
Remotely triggered? That operator would have been toast if the cat went with that one.

Remotely triggered?
SnoCats vibrate a lot, are very heavy and generate loud sound waves to boot. Patrol’s report mighta figured it caused a whole lotta nearby shakin going on.

Report said they first tried to explode the beast but it didn’t let loose. Cat vibes mighta been the last straw that broke the camels back. Hopefully folks learn something from it.

Yup. Would need an ejector seat & a parachute and that still might not been a save. I didn’t see if it had been on a winch.

Or he pushed a pile of snow out over the convex trigger point?
