    Whiteface Conditions

I believe there is some truth to both. There is really no reason for The Notch to have been closed as soon as they had 2 routes to the base. They had that prior to last weekend. I noticed at LWF that the same pegs that the newer Gore lifts have that go between your legs, were installed on the...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I haven't ridden it yet, but I really don't understand why they even did this project. It provides no discernible improvement to the experience. It's an updated version of the cold, slow lift that everyone hated. It needed to go detachable, or at least have the loading carpet it was supposed to...

    Whiteface Conditions

Would've been nearly perfect if they didn't screw the pooch with the lifts, not filling every seat on the gondola and leaving Freeway as "racers only" the entire day despite the snow report falsely claiming it was open, thus making the line for the gondola unnecessarily long. I hid from the...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

That's their cost per kwh. It does not matter where the power is going. It costs the same. The system is more water-limited now because they have a lot of low e guns. This is good as it means more snow is being made. Before the widespread adoption of low e guns, snowmaking systems were almost...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

When the Hudson River was tapped in 1995, it was probably considered more than enough at the time. The system would've mostly been air-limited back then, so water capacity would've rarely if ever been maxed out. This was even still largely true when Burnt Ridge was added in 2008. When they...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

What they are dealing with is actually a good problem to have. Let me explain The Hudson River pumphouse runs at 4800 gpm and either feeds the reservoir or directly to the ski bowl trails. The main pumphouse runs at 6800 gpm and feeds from the reservoir to the rest of the mountain. If main is...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

Snowshed has been open since November 21st, which is earlier than most ski areas opened period, much less beginner terrain, including all 3 in ORDA. Still, Whiteface and Belleayre have done an excellent job so far. I'm less enthused with how Gore is doing, but it is far better than last year.

It was originally supposed to have a loading carpet. Not sure why it was omitted.

    Gore Mountain Conditions

The system has two pumphouses, one at the Hudson River, and one at the Reservoir. There are no booster stations. The Hudson River pumphouse runs at 4800 gpm, and can either feed the reservoir, or directly onto some trails, including all of the Ski Bowl, some of Burnt Ridge and even up to the...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

I'm not sure what you want Gore to be, as it seems like you complain about absolutely everything they do, even when things are going well. Given how the snowmaking system works, the ski bowl is largely independent of the main mountain. So it makes sense to make snow there when they can, and not...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

It is a common issue for opening beginner terrain early in the season that it is often at low elevation and difficult to maintain cover. Belleayre was able to solve this by putting a magic carpet and bunny hill at the top, and it was possible because there was a relatively flat area at the top...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

This time of year you need to compare terrain mileage, but on this metric, Gore is considerably underperforming the other ORDA mountains. Gore currently has 3.24 miles of open terrain. Belleayre has 5.42 miles and Whiteface has 5.22 miles.

    Sno Train Discussion

There was unlikely enough space at the top of the hill for a full loop track, or a wye long enough to turn the entire train around. So they likely would've turned the locomotive around at a wye, and then ran it around the train on the siding. Most old passenger coaches had seats that folded back...

    Sno Train Discussion

I'm not speaking about the snow train in particular, but the idea that trains are obsolete is not correct. Two recent expansions of state-supported Amtrak routes prove that even an infrequent and relatively slow train can be popular enough that it greatly exceeds its ridership projections. The...

    Sno Train Discussion

Yes, bus trips exist to many ski resorts. Though since I don't live in NYC, I'm not really familiar with them. Very expensive. Expect fares similar to if you took a taxi that far. It's more intended for the west when people are traveling to the ski resorts from the airport. Turntables are...

    Sno Train Discussion

Yes, it's supposed to be Snow Train, but I figured I'd use the first part of my username. Anyways, this thread is to respond to various questions about trains in the other thread, without moving it off topic. The shuttle from Westport likely did not work simply due to the travel time, and the...

    Ski Bowl 3.0 at Gore

Finally, I get to share my extensive knowledge of trains on this site. X is incorrect about the speed of the Ethan Allen Express, as 7.5 hours is approximately the travel time since they extended it to Burlington in 2022. It used to only go to Rutland, with a travel time of about 5.5 hours, and...

    Gore Mountain Conditions

Does this mean it will be isolated from the rest of the mountain with hopefully a shuttle between the two? Will Burnt Ridge be prioritized to get everything connected? Once they have North open, they can connect by opening Backwoods to Eagle's Nest, and then Hedges out. Also, please note that...
