Mount Peter Conditions

Thinking of taking my 4 year old up on Friday, anybody know if they have the learning area open?

Learning area will be open on Friday. One carpet and one trail.

Despite the lot being pretty full, I'm impressed by how little we had to wait for the lifts. Before lunch and after were almost two completely different days today both weather and conditions wise.

Still trying to get my kid out of the pizza and to find that outside edge.

Get an instructor with a good bag of "wedgebuster" tricks and it will be french fries in no time!

I like to motivate it with hockey stops with the reward being to kick up a cloud of snow, then move to "hockey stop turns" and there you go. Also matching with the hands.

I've tried but he's 5 and doesn't know what "hockey" is. ;)

Yeah I'm going to sign up for a few lessons at Platty.

If i may, be patient with yourself and your little one. Unless he or she is trying to do the wedge of death down a black (which I can't justify), it does take them time to develop nueromuscular coordination, and other than a habit they can work out of over time, a wedge for a period of time is not the worst thing. If I may not, just tell me to take a hike.

I don't know the relative scale, but it seems to me getting skis to act in unison, edging two different skis in opposite ways (inside edge pressure on outside ski and inside edge pressure on inside ski different sides of two different feet) seems pretty hard, and that is just a small part of a turn.

My kids both did either full or 6 week programs, and if you are willing and able to commit to that, it makes them pick up a lot of good habits. I totally get that is not necessarily something folks are interested in or can make work. That gave them enough of a base that they can go out and ski relatively well after a year off (ahem old man breaking his shoulder).

I can't remember how many seasons my son did - 1 or 2 - I think 1 seasonal program at Bell and 1 6 week at Gore; daughter did 6 weeks at Gore. That combination got the older one (son) capable of doing anything at Gore except he has not gone down Rumor or double barrel (and I personally would not let him unless it was after a few days of lessons and good instruction). FWIW, I took him down 46'er a few years ago in good conditions and he crushed it.

My daughter gets down things like Open Pit and hawkeye with no real problems and went down Hulabaloo in pretty hard packy conditions this past go round. She is younger and so the kids hit that not wanting to go to the mountain thing before my son chronilogically. We found a new trick - bringing friends on trips - which seems to be working like gold. Hence the jammed Rivian last go round.

And you just may not have the time, intersest, etc. to invest in schleping for seasonal or half season lessons.

Sorry not trying to be ranty. Your child's future self no matter what will be thankful that you spent the time with them that you did in the pic above and all the other time you spend together, no matter where it is.

No, totally appreciated!!

We don't have a place in the cats or daks, so it's usually weekend to weekend right now, but when my youngest one is on skis we'll probably do a seasonal rental and I'll definitely be interested in the programs.

Mine too. I thought it was 7?

By the end my wife was burned out, 7 weekends in a row from NJ.

Huge progress was made during that season.

We don't either - for Belle it was a ski club I am apparently not supposed to name on blogs. For Gore, one season we did a seasonal rental. Kinda small but fine, 8 min to the mountain. The season after they wanted to see if we wanted to rent again - they were great and I remember it was reasonable at the time so if you ever want I can try to find their email and pm it to you. They did do an extension at one point so don't know if they jacked up prices. We didn't rent again because the kids didn't want to go up pretty much every weekend.

I will say the seasonal rental was cool - obviously a splurge but I remember it being fairly reasonable and what brought the cost down alot was we went their for both pres day and mlk. I think we did like Jan 1 through march. I am sure timing is all over the place. My inlaws saw a moose and my kids saw a cub.

I can't remember which place it is but one of the Ny places that is like 1:30 from the city has a good racing program. Saw mill or something like that? It is near or off 684. I have heard great thing's about Mt. Peter and took my kids their once or twice. That is probably only like an hour from you if you are in Jersey.
